Two financial firms that had recently separated ownership but remained tied together inside a single Microsoft 365 tenant, with both organizations needing to operate independently, manage sensitive financial data under their own compliance obligations, and eliminate any risk of one entity’s systems or staff retaining access to the other’s information. The shared tenant had worked while the businesses were still aligned, but as each firm moved forward on its own path, the arrangement became more of a liability than a convenience, and leadership on both sides recognized that a clean technical separation needed to happen before the risk became a real incident rather than a hypothetical one.
When the two financial firms split ownership, their technology never caught up to the business decision. Both organizations continued operating inside the same Microsoft 365 tenant, which meant shared domains, overlapping mailboxes, and user identities that made it difficult to draw a clean line between which systems and data belonged to which entity.
